Moment of Happiness
The drowsy sounds and sights of the highway
finally ceased and were instead replaced by narrow windy roads. It had been a
long ride and nothing had gone wrong yet – but then again, what could possibly
go wrong now? The worse part had just been accomplished.
Liquid blues scanned the surroundings quietly; even the radio had been turned
down as the car glided slowly down the strange neighborhood. Everything was
different here, but not necessarily bad.
It’s been raining since you left me
Now I’m drowning in the flood
You see I’ve always been a fighter
But without you I give up
Finally. This was the right place. The car
door swung open then quietly slammed shut moments later. There was a miniscule
moment of hesitation as those blues gazed over the house just a few feet away.
This was the one that had been talked about feverishly for months and now –
here it was. There was only one other car in the driveway, one that was easily
recognizable.
Now your pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh, some that made us cry
One that made you have to say goodbye…
Quiet steps caused the house to be slowly
drawn nearer until there was nowhere else to go than through the front door. A
black painted nail touched the doorbell lightly; it could be heard ringing
inside. A soft breath was released, the warm vapor curling in the contrasting
cold of the winter night for a moment before finally disappearing. At that same
moment, the door was cracked open.
What I’d give to run my fingers through
your hair
To touch your lips, to hold you near
The visitor raised her head slowly, bright
blues meeting deep violets in silence. No words were needed at that moment as
the two gazed at one another. That was a second of silent astonishment and
disbelief. A moment both had been looking forward but neither ever thought it
possible this soon. A moment neither would forget in a long time – if ever.
“Andariel…” a whisper, so faint it was barely
even audible was released into the night only to be mimicked seconds later.
“Tizzrah…”
It was hard to tell which of the two had
moved first, but they soon found themselves in each other’s arms. A feeling so
unreal and so magical almost. Tears were spilled immediately after the
slightest of touches. Tizzrah trembled steadily in the husky’s arms, sobbing
quietly as all the pain she had suffered throughout the past few months finally
washed to the surface. It had taken a moment, but it had finally hit her: the
husky was really here. This wasn’t yet another dream!
“I can’t believe it… you came…” she managed
to choke out between sobs. Andariel, too shedding uncontrollable tears just
nodded and tightened her hold around the skunk’s shoulders. No words would
form, no voice would sound – it was so hard. But it was all right now, she was
here and everything would change.
When he holds you close, when he pulls you
near
When he says the words you’ve been needing to hear
I’ll wish I was him ‘cause those words are mine
To say to you till the end of time
Yes, things would change now. Now nothing
else could stand in the way, no more daggers would be piercing themselves into
their hearts, digging the life from them; yanking away the most precious
feeling of them all. This very moment. There would be no more parents telling
them what to do, no more miles between them to make things complicated.
Nothing. This was it, this was real and it was final. Finally there would be
freedom.
The hours passed thankfully slowly, every
moment absolutely cherished as if a few hours could fill in the gap of months
that had been lost to tears and heartaches. That time could not be brought
back, however, but at least they could now focus on the present instead of the
sweet past and uncertain future. Now things were set.
I can promise you tomorrow
But I can’t buy back yesterday
Tizzrah shifted slightly, arms wrapping
around Andariel’s waist as the two lay comfortably on the skunk’s bed. The
radio had been turned on, but neither quite registered whatever was playing at
the moment. The tears had ceased to fall for now, but they were certain to
return at a later time. That’s just the way it always was. Andariel held her
tightly, basking in her warmness, the feel of her there so very close. It was a
feeling both had once so greatly enjoyed and hung onto. It had also been torn
from them. Those damn miles…
A soft, tiny kiss touched the skunk’s
forehead and then her lips. It was a gentle kiss, one of passion and
unconditional love. But also a desperate one at that. The feel of her lips, the
sweetness that they carried was like nothing she had ever experienced – they
carried the sweetest of nectars if such even existed. How long had they waited
for this moment? How long had they suffered, and hoped that this day would
come?
Tizz leaned into the kiss, once again her
eyes filled with unshed tears. It was so hard to accept that this was actually
happening. Everything had been worth it. The pain and the battles had all been
worth it. All those moments of doubt were over nothing.
“I love you, corazon…” whispered Andariel
against the skunk’s lips. A salty drop had gotten between the kiss, the husky
only savored the warm tear and gazed down at her.
“I love you too…” Tizz managed a weak smile despite the tears and returned the
whisper. They remained like that: in each other’s arms, kissing sweetly and
exchanging whispered sentiments back and forth. It was nice – so very nice. No,
it was more than nice it was almost like a dream. But it felt too real to be a
dream. Dreams were cruel – they only teased and taunted, never gave way to
sweet reality. Only insanity could come from such dreams: there would come a
moment when the desperation would be too much to handle and what would happen
then?
“You realize that I am never going to let you
go now…”
“Please don’t,” pleaded Tizzrah. Violet orbs met the husky’s blues, searching,
pleading and begging desperately for those words to be true.
“I won’t, ever. I’m not going back. You’re mine now, love. Nothing is going to
stop us now,” the husky whispered. Fingers brushed along her cheek, caressing
her softly. The skunk only nodded quietly, the answer obviously satisfying her.
It was when they shared another tender kiss that things changed…
Well I’m so far away
That each step I take is on my way home
A king’s ransom in dimes I’d given each night
Just to see through this payphone
Still I run out of time
Or it’s hard to get through
Till the bird on the wire flies me back to you
I’ll just close my eyes and whisper,
Baby blind love is true
Andariel gasped sharply and sat up. Her
surroundings had changed – she was once again in her own room, her own bed. She
glanced around slowly as to make sure she was seeing this right. Painful
disbelief crossed her features and she touched a finger to her lips in a
desperate attempt to suppress a sob, but it was no longer possible. She had
been cheated out of happiness once again.
When you close your eyes
Know I’ll be thinking about you
It had been a dream! An awful and tormenting
dream… no, the awakening was the torturous part of it. A single tear streamed
down her face and fell to the covers around her waist. Same covers that had
once held Tizzrah so comfortably in them. Would this ever end? Cloudy visage
glanced around the room once more, but she didn’t quite see it. What she was
could not be brought back. What she saw was the sweet, blissful past when she
had been there…
The husky fell back against the mattress with
a loud sob and tugged the covers over her head. Perhaps the darkness could wipe
away reality for just a little longer…
